Sunscreen Tips

Planning to enjoy the sun and fun for the Fourth of July? Keep these 3 tips in mind when you’re applying sunscreen to ensure you’re getting the best coverage and protection.

  1. Layer it On—To get the best coverage possible, apply one coat of sunscreen to your body then wait 5

Avoid the burn with these sunscreen tips.

to 10 minutes and apply another coat. One ounce (or a shot-glass full) may seem like too much sunscreen but it’s actually the correct amount to get the protection advertised on the label.
  2. Reapply Regularly—“All-day protection” and “Waterproof” are misleading statements. Sunscreen should always be reapplied after swimming and toweling off and all sunscreen starts to degrade after two hours and should be reapplied; there’s no such thing as “all-day” sunscreen. [Read more →]

Living Well at Home, Work, & School

Sara Beth

June 29th, 2012 · Healthy Living

LiveWell Colorado is a nonprofit organization committed to preventing and reducing obesity in Colorado by promoting healthy eating and living. Even if you aren’t a Colorado resident you can benefit from these small steps for living well at home, work, and school that will add up to a healthier you.

Add more color to your plate to live well.

Living well at home is easier than you may think! Whether there are one or twenty people in your home, everyone can benefit with small changes. Choosing to cut back (or eliminate) sugary drinks is a strong first step to make. According to LiveWell, children’s risk for obesity is 60% higher for every daily sugary beverage and adults who drink one or more sodas daily are 27% more likely to become obese. Other steps to consider:

  • Adding more play to your day- Walking, even for as little as 30 minutes a day, can help prevent chronic disease, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and increase energy.
  • Make your plate more colorful-Adding fruits and vegetables to each meal will help you fill up on the good stuff and provide your body with important nutrients without making you feel like you’re missing out.
  • Cook and eat together as a family—Research shows that kids who eat meals with their family will not only consume fewer calories than kids that do not but they’re also likely to eat more fruits and veggies. [Read more →]

Keep your plants healthy all summer with these DIY pesticides!

Because oil smothers insects it’s an effective ingredient in natural pesticides and safe enough to be sprayed directly onto plants. Don’t forget the underside of leaves and be sure to reapply after rain.

  • Mineral Oil: Combine 1 tablespoon mineral oil, 1 quart water, and a few drops liquid soap in a spray bottle (Be sure the product is soap and not a detergent ). Shake the bottle well and spray directly onto leaves to dehydrate insects and their eggs.
  • Canola Spray: Combine 1 tablespoon canola oil with a few drops liquid soap and one quart water in a spray bottle. Shake well to blend oil and water and spray on infested plants.

Benefits of Meditation

Sara Beth

June 8th, 2012 · Healthy Living

Reducing stress levels and naturally detoxifying your system are only two ways that meditation can benefit your body. At any given time during the day, our thoughts bounce around as we consider the past and what could have happened or focus on the future and what we plan to do or what might be. How often do you sit in the “now” and apply some concentration to nothing other than that moment? We’re not trying to go too new-age on you but we would like to lay out how meditation can not only calm the mind and spirit but can also benefit your entire body.

Benefits of Meditation

The benefits of meditation reach beyond relaxation.

The benefits of meditation reach beyond relaxation.

When given the chance to slow down and relax, our adrenal glands reduce cortisol production. This stress hormone effects weight, insulin, bone, memory, and our immune systems negatively when it is unregulated. Spending time in a meditative state will help keep cortisol levels in check and studies have shown that our immune system can even be improved. One theory on the benefits of meditation to the immune system is that it helps to squash mental negativity that may dampen immune response while another theory is that it signals your body to step up antibody production. Whichever theory is true, research shows that people who meditate are better prepared to fight off infections and may even have better pain control when they are injured. [Read more →]

600352_10151168565014535_243777274534_13681672_1985031816_n[1]I shared an image on Hanna’s facebook page that forced health care costs, exercise realities, and the misconceptions of medicine into my thoughts. I sat for a minute, pondered the image, and set about searching online for information that would perhaps prove the image wrong. Before I began, I had a pretty good idea of what I would find and the purpose of this blog is to share how very EASY it is to make small changes that can change your life and your health and help change the graphic to the right.

When asked, “What makes us healthy?” 10% of those questioned said access to care, 20% cited genetics, 20% said the environment, and 50% said healthy behaviors. Those are great answers until you consider the graphic beside it which shows that 88% of our money is spent on medical services in order to be healthy with 8% cited as other and only 4% of our money being spent on healthy behaviors. For “healthy behaviors” to account for half of what makes us healthy, something just doesn’t add up here. [Read more →]
