Get Checked! Early Detection and Prevention

Caitlin S.

June 27th, 2013 · Hanna Kroeger, Healthy Living, Heart Health

high-blood-pressure-and-life-insuranceThanks to modern day science, a vast amount of information on illness and disease is available. Each year, more information is uncovered that helps us prevent ailments, cure sickness, and heal. Today, doctors can detect many illnesses at a very early stage, and prevent them from becoming serious. Despite our ability to prevent the development of certain fatal diseases (such as cardiovascular disease), many people still suffer from them.  While high blood pressure can be diagnosed through a simple test and prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, Americans have a 90% risk of developing high blood pressure during their life time. More than half of all Americans over the age of 60 have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. High blood pressure affects both sexes, but men are more likely to develop it earlier in life.

  • High blood pressure increases risk of heart attack, stroke, and congestive heart failure
  • In 2009, high blood pressure was listed as the primary cause of death of 61,762 Americans

Why risk it? Blood pressure can be easily tested during a regular visit to the doctor.

This, along with other life threatening conditions, can easily be solved when detected early. Detection can help save your life, or the life of a loved one. Men’s Health Network encourages both men and women to visit the doctor in June. June is Men’s Health Month.

Get checked! Men should…

  • Test their blood pressure every year
  • Have a TB skin test done every 5 years
  • Get regular physical examinations
  • Get a tetanus booster every 10 years
  • Receive a rectal exam (colonoscopy) annually
  • Have their blood evaluated for PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) to detect prostate cancer
  • Perform self examinations at leave once a month (check for lumps on testicles and look for signs of skin and oral cancer (moles, freckles, lesions in the mouth)
  • Get checks for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) on a yearly basis

Do you measure up? Use this checklist to determine if you are due for an examination (click for full size).getitcheckedpostermen

Grape seeds

Grape seeds have known to help with some types of poor circulation and high cholesterol.

Grapes have been an important medicinal and nutritional food for thousands of years. Egyptians ate them at least 6,000 years ago, Greek philosophers praised their healing powers, and European healers made an ointment from the sap of grapevines to treat skin and eye disease. Today we know that there is healing to be had from even the tiniest part of the grape: its seed. Grape seed increases antioxidant levels in blood and sweeps away free radicals to keep your body healthy and your skin looking younger. From combating aging to reducing your risk of heart disease, the tiny grape seed makes a great impact on our well being. [Read more →]

Pixabay father-656734_640 (2) This week at Hanna’s, we celebrated Men’s Health Week. We took a look at why prostate cancer takes the life of so many men despite the fact that it can be easily cured when detected early. We saw that men are at risk for developing heart disease, and that osteoporosis, often called the “women’s disease” threatens the density of males’ bones. This Father’s Day, give your Dad the gift of health with these fun and easy gift ideas:

The Truth About Aging: Men and Bone Loss

Caitlin S.

June 12th, 2013 · Hanna Kroeger, Healthy Living, Herbs for

Pixabay bones white background-2029338_1280Contrary to common belief, the “women’s disease,” osteoporosis, or bone loss, threatens both genders. While 80% of individuals with symptoms of osteoporosis and low bone mass are women, 20%-or 5.6 million- are men. The disease is almost always associated with women, especially women going through menopause. Due to this association, many doctors fail to recognize symptoms of osteoporosis in male patients. Changes in hormonal production as males age can lead to a loss in bone mass, an eventually severe osteoporosis.

The most common cause of male osteoporosis is testosterone deficiency. Men need healthy levels of both testosterone and estrogen to maintain healthy bone mass, and a decline in the production of either hormone could lead to health problems. Hypogonadism refers to low levels of hormones in [Read more →]

200443793-001Statistics indicate that women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventative services than men. While we’re thinking of how to celebrate dad in June, it’s important to consider all the men in your life and how you can ensure they are as healthy as possible. June is Men’s Health Month and people across the country are wearing blue to show they’re paying attention to issues surrounding the quality of life for the men in their lives and this week, June 10-16th, is especially important because it’s Men’s Health Week!

The purpose behind Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Produce: Today’s Crops Don’t Match Up

Caitlin S.

June 10th, 2013 · Hanna Kroeger, Healthy Living

heirloom-corn1   Our primary source of nutrients is the food we eat. Fruits and vegetables in particular provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals that serve our systems. Hanna advocated the idea of healing the body through food, a philosophy Kroeger stands behind to this day. Modern day medical experts agree with this idea around the world. If we are going to heal our ailments through the food we eat, it is important to optimize the amount of nutrients we get from our food. Optimizing our nutrient intake may seem like a daunting task with so many essential micro- and macro-nutrients to keep track of. Simply making the right choices in the grocery store can help us keep our bodies healthy.

In the modern day grocery store, certain vegetables may have significantly higher health benefits than others. The difference in nutritional value, according to the New York Times, may be due to the way produce has changed over the last several decades.  According to the article, “studies published within the past 15 years show that much of our produce is relatively low in phytonutrients, which are compounds with the potential to reduce the risk of four of our modern scourges: cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dementia,” and that every fruit and vegetable in the produce aisle has lost nutrients over the course of agricultural history.
