dv746075_XS[1]With winter that seems to last forever, as soon as summer shows up in Colorado I like to spend as much time outdoors as I can and that includes cooking and eating. July is National Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month

While many of us have accepted stiff muscles and joints as a normal part of waking up in the morning, it’s not something we’ve always had to deal with. Have you ever noticed how kids seem to be able to fall asleep anywhere, in any position, and still wake up pain-free? Their youthful skeletal systems seem to be unaffected by hours of sleep on a kinked neck. Joint pain is usually thought of as a condition brought on by age. Arthritis in particular is considered a part of growing older, while juvenile arthritis is often overlooked. Frequently this leads to misdiagnosis when children do have arthritis. For those affected, juvenile arthritis is a serious and painful condition.

Drink more water. Hit the gym. Eat more greens. Say no to ice cream. Cut the caffeine. Do yoga. Stop stressing about it.

kool-kale  The list of healthy living choices seems to be longer than ever, and while it is easy enough to integrate a few of these items into your daily routine, keeping up with all of them can be time consuming. We all want to feel as young as possible for as long as we can, but it can be almost impossible to stick to healthy choices when you’re running from one appointment to another. A cup of coffee is the no-brainer answer to fatigued mornings, and the summer heat is begging you to go out for home churned ice cream, but both have their consequences. Keep the Itch Away: Natural Poison Ivy Remedy

Caitlin S.

July 9th, 2013 · Hanna Kroeger, Herbs for, home remedy

Poison IvyMany of us remember playing in nearby parks, forests, and fields as kids. Our days of adventuring are remembered for the presence of friends, laughter, and new discoveries. Amongst those memories however, is the unpleasant reminder of poison ivy exposure. Our hikes through meadows and fields led us to some unfriendly plants that left us itchy for days. Hoping to prevent future rashes, our parents taught us the common mnemonic rhyme “leaflets three; let it be,” to aid in poison ivy identification. While the rhyme is a helpful reminder on what poison ivy looks like, it does not provide much relief when you find yourself already standing in a the middle of an ivy patch, skin burning. Poison ivy, or Toxicodendron radicans, produces urushiol, which it secretes through its sap. Urushiol is an oily organic compound that causes a blistering rash on the skin. The same chemical is found in Poison oak and Poison sumac. Poison Ivy blisters can last for three weeks, and are itchy and painful. Blisters that split open are prone to infection. [Read more →]

Thanks to everyone who entered our natural beauty from the inside out giveaway with great products from Aura Cacia, Wild Sage, Burt’s Bees, Kiss My Face, Bee and Flower, Derma E, Turtle, and Twin Lab! Find out how you can be our lucky winner!

sweet almond oil Sweet Almond Oil from Aura Cacia moisturizes and softens skin without a heavy oil feeling. Use almond oil as a general face and body moisturizer (add drops of your favorite essential oil for a scent), as a natural eye makeup remover, or as a shaving oil. Massage a generous amount of sweet almond oil into your scalp before going to bed if you experience dandruff, just be careful as the oil will stain your sheets, and shampoo as normal the next morning. If you have psoriasis, cracked skin, or eczema, rub the oil into those areas to moisturize the dry area and heal the skin. Aura Cacia’s Apricot Kernel Oil can be used topically to treat dandruff or dry skin issues and inflammation of the skin as well as fine lines. Because the body readily absorbs apricot kernel oil there is no greasy residue left behind. Both of these oils included in the basket are pure and natural and serve as great carrier oils for our selection of essential oils. Please note that while sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oils are popular oils to cook with, if a label does not specify that the oil is edible it should be for external use only. [Read more →]
