During the winter months there’s always a sickness being passed around the office or school and, depending on how well your immune system is prepared, you could be the next victim. This winter I saw a trend in the people I knew: several of them were using Thieves Essential Oil from Young Living in a variety of forms. I was curious to know the story behind the name and also why this oil was so powerful in keeping their immune systems healthy. The popularity of Turmeric is on the rise, and for good reason. Not only is this delicious spice a great addition to meals but it also has several health benefits and is quickly becoming the talk of the natural health world. NPR recently shared a story about how Penn State research has provided strong evidence that spicy foods assist the heart, even in fatty meals. Through their work they noted that cloves, cinnamon, and turmeric were surprisingly beneficial to decreasing triglycerides and insulin levels. The study included a group of people and two versions of a high fat meal. One meal contained low levels of spices and the second contained bold amounts. Blood levels of participants were checked following each meal and triglyceride levels dropped a third and insulin levels dropped 20% following the spicy meal. Herbal Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Rosemary and other home remedies for bad breath are in your spice rack!

Dill: Try chewing dried dill seeds or adding fresh dill to your meals to freshen breath.

Thyme: Make a tea of dried thyme and hot water; allow to steep for a few minutes. Drink several cups a day.

Caraway Seed and Anise Seed: These two seeds mixed together make a great home remedy for bad breath. Try bruising the seeds and steeping in hot water for a tea or using them in your meals. You could also try chewing the seeds to freshen your breath.

Rosemary: Prepare a tea of dried rosemary and hot water; allow it to steep for five minutes then cool completely. Gargle with this tea several times a day. [Read more →]

Cholesterol and the Side Effects of Statins

The Food and Drug Administration, and various other clinical investigations, report a number of side effects of statins, a class of drugs used for lowering the cholesterol levels in the blood. The FDA stated that the “benefits outweigh the risks” in a recent conference that outlined the dangers to memory loss that statins may present. The FDA failed to outline the dangers and side effects of statins that exist outside of memory loss; 90-99% of which go unreported by doctors. We understand that some people may not be able to lead healthy and productive lives without the help of statin drugs, but think it’s important to outline the side effects of statins beyond memory loss.
