Picking a Healthy Petfood

There are so many different varieties of pet foods out there, all claiming why they deserve your purchase.  Amongst all these claims, there are several important factors to look at when choosing a pet food.

Picking a Healthy Dog Food

Cricket and Cappie want you to choose a petfood right for your dog's age and health issues.

Just as in humans, it is very important where the majority of the calories are coming from in food. The typical healthy ratio for a dog is 50% from veggies, 40% from meat, and 10% from other sources of carbohydrates. This of course can change depending on what stage of life the dog is in, or how high their energy level is. With that information in mind one should start by examining the ingredient list of the food in question. The first thing to look for is if the meat or protein can be found near the top of the ingredient list. It is just as important to determine what the source of meat is. Dog food companies use many different types of meats, and by-products made from these meats.  I would highly recommending only picking dog food which either contains the actual meat (chicken, fish, beef, lamb), or a meal derived from the meat (chicken-meal, fish-meal, etc). Never pick a dog food which simply lists meat as the ingredient, as that could be anything. [Read more →]

Eat whole foods to be healthy

In today’s modern world, it is becoming increasingly rare for people to be eating regular whole food. Instead, we are bombarded with commercials promoting the newest cereal which now contains 12 grams of fiber. Don’t get me wrong, a cereal with 12 grams of fiber isn’t necessarily bad, but many Americans are starting to forget about regular unprocessed food when faced with claims of fiber coated with sugar. The unprocessed foods I am referring to are things such as: brown rice, oatmeal, vegetables, lean meats, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, almonds, fish, eggs, and some fruit. [Read more →]

What foods should you buy organic? Is this fruit full of pesticides?

Ah, Summer.  Sunny bike rides, vacations, baseball games, farmers markets and pesticides…  Pesticides?  They don’t seem to fit in here, right?  However, you might be more susceptible to ingesting these nasty chemicals come Summer time when fruits and veggies are in season and the pyramid of juicy, fuzzy peaches at the store is calling your name.  A refreshing fruit salad on a hot Summer day sounds delicious and healthy, but not if your fruit is filled with pesticides. Celiac Disease is prevelant-how many people do you know who have a gluten intolerance?

May is already here, can you believe it?  Each month a number of health issues are recognized for national awareness and May is National Celiac Disease Awareness Month.  With the dramatic rise in gluten  related issues including 1 out of 133 Americans that have Celiac Disease I want to use this week’s blog to help spread the word.

This condition continues as long as these food products are in the diet.    [Read more →]

In fact you can live off of quality protein and a little fat, no carbs necessary! Many people don’t get nearly enough of this essential building block of life. [Read more →]
