Maca, a starchy tuber similar in taste to a potato, originated in the high altitude of the Andes Mountains of Peru. It has been a dietary staple of Peruvians for over 2000 years. Today, it is gaining popularity and value for its use as an herbal supplement.
Maca is a nutritionally dense plant of the mustard family. It is rich in the B vitamins, vitamins C and E, as well as calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus and amino acids. It also contains several health promoting glucosinolates (the sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables.) Studies have indicated that these types of foods possess anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties as well as protect the body from carcinogens.
Maca is part of the very popular group of herbs called Adaptogens. Adaptogens have a normalizing effect on the body, creating homeostasis throughout the body’s systems. Adaptogens also increase the body’s ability to resist the damaging effects of stress. Maca is a very interesting adaptogenic herb. It does not contain hormones but has a profoundly nourishing effect on the endocrine system. It supports thyroid and adrenal function by regulating hormone production. This achieves balance throughout the body!
Here are some of the benefits people have enjoyed from taking Maca:
-Energy: Increases stamina and helps to improve energy levels. Popular with many athletes for peak performance. Importantly, Maca boosts energy in a sustained manner that does not stress the adrenal glands. It also supports mental focus and concentration!
-Mood Balance: Normalizing and balancing effects may help equip a person to better handle anxiety, depression, stress and mood swings.
-Reproductive Health: Helps improve libido and endurance. Its hormone balancing effect has been known to increase fertility in men and women, as well as ease symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. Studies suggest it may improve semen quality and help reduce enlarged prostates.
-Blood Health: Improves blood circulation. It is a good source of iron, helping the body avoid anemia. It helps to restore and build up red blood cells and is useful in oxygen deficiency!
-Skin Health: The high vitamin and mineral content aids in cell regeneration and wound healing. Improved skin health including smoother skin and reduction of acne is a great benefit in taking this supplement!

Are there any prescription drugs that you can not take this with??

Hi Nancy,
We have seen claims that Maca can act like an estrogen in the body (although it does not actually have any hormones in it so there’s some debate around this) and is recommended to not use it with oral contraceptives or in cases of hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast or uterine cancer. For information specific to the medications you are taking, it is best to consult your pharmacist. Thanks for your comment!

I have an over active thyroid and am on Rx to reduce my thyroid hormone. Will this adaptogen be OK to take along with my RX?

Although we are not doctors, so you should double check with your medical professional about contraindications with your Rx, one of the great things about Maca is that it doesn’t contain hormones, even natural ones, so its action is on balancing and tonifying the whole endocrine system.
