It seems everyone has a full plate around the holidays and, given the fact that 22% of Americans report an extreme level of stress daily, sometimes we need a reminder for how to reign in the stress and enjoy the season. We’ve got quick tips for keeping yourself in check as you’re busy with family, friends, travel, shopping, planning, entertaining, and trying to keep it together!
Be realistic—Easier said than done but no plan will be perfect. There will be a snag, a late flight, a forgotten detail, and maybe even a family argument. Accepting that the holiday season will come with some bad along with the good will keep you moving through the challenges and looking forward to each of the events you’re involved in. Remember what’s important and set out to enjoy those things; forget the elaborate decorations or food and focus on family, friends, and making memories.
Take some time for you—It’s easy to give in to the pressure of a schedule and a to-do list and the expectations of others and the stress… and, and, and. Slow down, recharge your battery, and focus on yourself for a bit; you’ll be glad you did. Just 5 minutes spent relaxing with deep breaths, meditation, a walk, or even listening to your favorite music can bring your stress levels down and help you to better accomplish your goals. Don’t let the season be a non-stop whirlwind! Take a step back, realize there is only so much you can do in a day and focus on some self-care.
Ask for help—Can’t make it to drop off a gift? Running late for an event and have some errands to run? Have a to-do list longer than your arm and only one day to accomplish it? Ask for some help from anyone you trust! During the holidays we often forget that while we are in the giving spirit, others are too. Ask a family member or friend to help you get through your list, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed. Experiencing holiday anxiety? Talk with others to help you navigate your feelings and work toward a solution. Just because everyone is busy making merry and bright doesn’t mean you can’t take a step back and ask for a few minutes of less stress. The holidays are exciting but stressful and sometimes we need to remember we are not alone in how we’re feeling. Economic decline has meant that many of us need to work harder and longer to fulfill our ideas of a successful holiday season but try not to get wrapped up in that! Take some time for yourself, get to the root of all the fuss over the festivities, and enjoy! If you’re feeling low on energy, add an adaptogenic herb to your life. Feeling tense and stressed? Unwind with a cup of tea to soothe your nerves.
No Christmas, Kwanza, Chanukah, or other holiday celebration is perfect. (Reread that sentence if necessary)
