Taming Back-to-School Stress

If you’re heading back to school or getting your kids ready to, you understand that this transitional time can be stressful. Whether you’re concerned with the schedule changes, the anticipation for the start of something new, or worried with an increased workload there are tips for getting off on the right foot and making this school year less stressful.

Start a Schedule Early and Get a Routine

Parent, teacher, or student--tame the back-to-school stress!

Parent, teacher, or student--tame the back-to-school stress!

When I was a teen, I never understood why my mother would enforce the rule of going to bed by 10 pm and waking up at 6:30 in the morning during the last couple of weeks of my summer break. My sister and I were cranky and unable to be much more than zombies for the first few days but (slowly) it became easier to wake up and get going. With this small change in our schedule my mother prepared us to get up and out in the morning with little anxiety or rush. By starting schedules before the school year begins, you may be able to ease the impact of the changes on yourself or your children. Developing a routine is a great way to encourage a new schedule as well as introducing quiet time for homework or setting up a time for a healthy family dinner. Once school begins, and extra-curricular activities demand time and attention, small schedule changes from day-to-day will be less stressful for everyone and you can take control of a hectic situation.

Get Organized

Setting up a homework area and having a family calendar are simple organizational tips that benefit the entire family. Is soccer on Thursday or Wednesday this week and is that paper due by this Friday or next? Anxiety levels can soar when you feel disorganized and performance at school can suffer. Small changes can make a big impact on the ease of your day!

Take Care of Yourself

Taking care of yourself is an important part of taming back-to-school stress.

Taking care of yourself is an important part of taming back-to-school stress.

During transitions or the chaos of change, it’s important to remember to take care of yourself. Set aside time to practice meditation or breathing, get a good night’s rest, and don’t be afraid to give yourself some “me time”. When we are rested and relaxed we’re able to think more clearly, take better care of others, and transition easily into a new school year.

Talk and Listen

Anxiety over back-to-school issues can range from worries over a new teacher to concerns over affording tuition. Give your child a chance to voice their fears and be supportive to encourage healthy communication. If you’re a parent or an adult returning to school, confide in a friend or partner to cope with any anxiety you may be experiencing. Remembering that changes are difficult for everyone and promoting open communication will make transitions easier and anxiety levels lower.
