Spring Allergy Relief, Naturally

April 29th, 2013 · 2 Comments · Herbs for, home remedy

Spring is a beautiful beast for about 18 million adults and 7 million children each year who suffer from seasonal allergies. Sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, and itchy/watery/red eyes make enjoying the new green of trees or fresh buds of plants much more difficult. Hanna shared several remedies to help you cope (naturally) with the change of winter to spring and we’ve picked our favorites here from the book “Help One Another“.

Hanna’s Recipes and Cleanses for Sinus Issues:

To decongest sinuses: Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water. Add a little honey and sip slowly. You should drink 10 glasses of this throughout the day. Do not eat any dry food with this.

For sinus infections: Eat 1 teaspoon honey sprinkled with freshly ground black pepper. If you have the option of ingesting local honey for this remedy, give that a try. The allergens specific to your area may be carried into the hive by local bees and your body may be able to build up an immunity to pollens, making spring allergies less intense.

Drink peppermint tea and apply a warm poultice of peppermint on the sinus area.

Drink thyme tea.

Eat horseradish several times a day (jarred or fresh) for temporary relief. The sharp bite of horseradish will help to clear up your nasal passages so that breathing becomes easier.

Add one tablespoon marjoram with one tablespoon butter. Boil 5 minutes and strain through a cloth. Rub forehead, nose, cheeks, and nostrils with it.

Sip 12 ounces grape juice 2 times daily for 6 weeks.

Supplements and Foods:

  • Garlic
  • Mustard
  • Onion
  • Radish
  • Turnips
  • Ginger
  • Peppermint

Hanna’s Remedies:

If you suffer from spring allergies, you can take some steps to reduce your reaction to pollens and allergens. Avoid outdoor activities between 5 am and 10 am when pollen levels are at their highest and keep your windows closed during the peak season. Peak season for pollen depends on where you live: Northeastern US is April to May, Southern/Southeastern US is March to May, Midwestern US is April to May, and Western US is February to June. Curious to see what the pollen level is in your area of the US? Check out this pollen tracker.

Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment
(it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for inexperienced blog writers? I’d definitely
    appreciate it.
