The National Eye Institute projects that the number of people in the U.S. over age 40 who have glaucoma will increase from its current number of 2.7 million to 4.2 million by 2030. That’s a 58 percent increase and, considering glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness, we wanted to be sure you were aware of herbs that can guard your vision.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that primarily affect the middle-aged and elderly though it can affect people of all ages. Those at higher risk for glaucoma include people of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent; people over 60; family members of those already diagnosed; diabetics; and people who are severely nearsighted. Glaucoma gradually steals sight without warning and while there is no cure, prevention is possible and a key to ensuring your healthy vision for life.
Regular eye exams are especially important for people who are at a higher risk of glaucoma as it may help prevent unnecessary vision loss and a comprehensive eye exam is the greatest preventative step anyone can take to guard themselves. Herbs like Bilberry and Eyebright can also help guard your vision. Bilberry strengthens connective tissue and prevents free radical damage while helping the eye to adjust to darkness and glare more quickly. Modern research shows that the anthocyanosides in bilberries may be successful in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma. Eyebright supports healthy function of the eyes and contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and several of the B vitamins. Redness, swelling, and visual disturbances can be calmed with the use of this ancient herb. Taking these herbs individually is helpful for healthy eye function or you can choose a tincture which combines the two in an easy-to-use liquid form. Hanna created an Herbal Combination called Eye Formula for the healthy function of eyesight which contains Witch Hazel Bark, Bilberry leaf, Angelica Root, and Goldenseal Root. This combination can be taken by all age groups and acts as nourishment for the eyes.
