First aid kits for cuts and bruises while being active this summer are important but have you considered a first aid kit filled with natural products for stings, rashes, sun burn, or aching muscles? Take a look at the list below to see how you can complement your first aid kit this summer with herbs, homeopathics, and essential oils.
Essential Oils for First Aid
Lavender is a diverse essential oil that is useful for assisting in sound sleep but also for bites, stings, and
sunburn. For the itch or stinging sensation following a bug bit, apply a drop of lavender essential oil to bring immediate relief. For sunburn, add a few drops of the oil to your favorite emollient lotion to soothe the burn and help relieve the redness. Another remedy with lavender for sunburn is to add 10 drops to 1 cup of powdered milk in a container with an air-tight lid, shake and allow to sit over-night; add this combination to a lukewarm bath for relief. For heat rash, make a fusion of aloe vera and lavender by adding 5 drops of oil to a half-ounce of aloe. This blend can be applied directly to the skin and will cool and reduce inflammation.
Essential oils are integral in DIY repellents (get more recipes here) and the following repellent is especially useful throughout the country: 5 drops patchouli oil, 8-10 drops cedarwood, and 2 ounces witch hazel. Combine these ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well to blend, and spray liberally when going outdoors.
Homeopathics for First Aid
Rhus Tox is a popular homeopathic this time of year. Some of us enjoy ourselves too much while hiking, biking, and camping and might miss the poison ivy laying low. Keeping this remedy in your summer first aid kit is a smart one, especially if you’re active. Follow directions on package. See home remedies for poison ivy here.
After a long day of play or a strenuous workout, arnica is a soothing saver. Muscle soreness, pain, swelling, and bruising can each be relieved with this tiny pellet. Follow directions on package.
Giardia lives in streams and rivers and sees every living being as a host. If you’re spending time rafting, fishing, or swimming in natural waters, the odds of introducing giardia into your system are likely. A homeopathic can assist in removing this intruder.
Apis is a homeopathic that is useful for itching associated with bites and stings. Taking 5 pellets, 3x a day has shown great promise in relieving symptoms quickly.
